Dinner at The George and Dragon, Epping

For the first of all the exciting things coming on my blog, I was invited down to The George and Dragon pub in Epping for a complimentary three-course meal and drinks. And I mean, who could say no to that?
 
On Halloween night, my family and I headed to the pub for our meal. Having never been to the pub (or even Epping before), I didn’t know what to expect but it was lovely. All of the bay trees were covered in twinkling fairy lights (which made it feel really Christmass-y – even in October) and the original stained glass windows really added a touch of colour to the exterior.
As we walked in, we were greeted by the lovely front of house team who had invited us. They encouraged us to try a few drinks off their new cocktail menu. Anyone who knows me will know I love a cocktail and so I jumped at the opportunity to have a taster. I started with a Candy Floss Martini; a glass full of candy floss, spiced rum, lime and ginger – and boy was it good! It was so great I’m already looking to go back with my friends or my boyfriend for a (lot) couple of drinks. They have a 2 for £10 cocktail evening from Monday to Friday if you fancy giving it a try. While we sipped on a couple of cocktails, my family and I admired their brand-spanking-new refurbishment. With Instagram-worthy lamps and comfy, velour sofas, I really loved the modern yet cosy feel of the bar and restaurant. Plus, the lit fireplaces added an extra feeling of warmth and comfort – perfect as the weather starts to get colder.
Not long after getting our cocktails, the lovely manager, Laila, brought over a plate full of yummy canapés, which were basically small samples of some their starter dishes. I’m a big fan of calamari so my favourite starter/canapé had to be the Salt & Szechuan Pepper Squid with aioli.
If that wasn’t enough, we were given the opportunity to try their new dinner menu. I was pleased to see they pretty much had something for everyone; from pizza and salads to a fully-fledged vegan menu. That’s something my family and I really struggle with when going out, as we all like different types of foods and can never settle on where to go! For starters, I decided to try something different. Admittedly, I’m not a huge fish fan – to the point where I only really eat cod and that’s it. However, feeling brave I ordered the Sweet Chilli King Prawn Roll with julienne vegetables and a sweet chilli and soy dipping sauce. It sounded delicious and the filling definitely was! However, I found the actual roll quite hard to eat as I was expecting smaller bites rather than one large rice-paper package. I ended up pouring the chilli and soy sauce over the roll rather than do any dipping!
As for the rest of my family, they really enjoyed their starters. My mum had scallops to start and commented on how great they were. I know how hard they are to cook from the endless number of Hell’s Kitchen episodes we have watched. I was feeling a little apprehensive after the starter but the mains did not disappoint. Again, I pushed the boat out with my main dish and decided to give Roasted Pork Belly with Seared Scallops a try. Just fifteen minutes after we finished our starters, our mains arrived and I got the chance to dig into the juicy pork belly with dauphinoise potatoes and butternut puree. Honestly, I’ve never tasted anything better in my entire life – plus, it came with delicious crackling so what could wrong?!
To top off an already great meal, dessert was on the way. I confess to being a dessert addict so trying to pick just one dish was difficult but I managed, picking probably the most extra dish on the menu! While my family settled for Chocolate and Raspberry Pudding and Mango, Berry and Coconut Meringue Mess, I chose their Chocolate and Peanut BOMB! I was completely right to go with this choice; it was essentially a chocolate shell guarding sticky toffee pudding and peanut butter ice cream and when hot chocolate sauce is poured on top, it melts the shell.
If you’re looking for somewhere new to try this Winter, I would totally recommend The George and Dragon in Epping. The staff could not be friendlier, the service is incredibly quick and the food is to die for!
