As plus-size women, we are often told that wearing anything colourful is “unflattering” for our bigger bodies. After all, it makes us stand out too much – the centre of attention. Because god forbid, a fat girl wear something colourful and show off her body! It’s not like everyone’s going to suddenly realise at that moment she’s fat. I think they would have worked it out already by that point!
Anyway, if you’re as bored of the ugly tunic tops and tired leggings as me, I wanted to share my top tips for injecting a burst of colour into your wardrobe – especially as a plus-size woman. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go full rainbow just yet!
- Adding colour through accessories. There’s no need to panic! You don’t need to run out and buy the brightest, highlighter-yellow dress just yet – unless you want to. You are safe to keep your all-black ensemble for now. Instead, you can start slow by adding colour into your wardrobe by buying bold earrings or a statement scarf. It’s a great way to get familiar with wearing the spectrum of the rainbow without jumping straight into it.
- Have fun with darker shades. Despite trying to banish black from your wardrobe, you can still stick to dark shades. There are hues of red, blue and green which will still suit your preference for black clothing without wearing the colour. Try navy and burgundy for a safe yet fun way to introduce colour to your wardrobe.
- Purchase statement pieces in fun colours. Once you have made the jump from wearing all-black to adding a colourful scarf, try finding a statement piece you like in your favourite colour. This could be anything from a fiery red blazer or cobalt blue trousers. Anything that pops in colour but would compliment your day to day clothing. I am a huge fan of pastel shades like baby pink and sage green so I have a number of items in these colours.
What is one colour you refuse to wear? For me, it’s orange or purple – I just don’t like these colours against my skin. But I would love to hear yours.
