Ben Stokes, the captain of the England Test team, has withdrawn from consideration for the Indian Premier League in 2019.
Stokes only made two appearances for his new team in the 2023 competition after struggling with his fitness after being acquired by Chennai Super Kings for £1.65 million in December of last year.
Stokes’s long-standing knee ailment did not prevent him from being a standout in the Ashes this summer. He also recently returned from a 50-over retirement to play a part in England’s vain attempt to defend their World Cup title in India.
He has stated that he needs to limit his workload to play in the 2024 Indian Premier League, and he also has the Twenty20 World Cup coming up in June. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on his knee injury to be fit for England’s five-match Test series against India, which starts in January.
Even though Stokes isn’t available for the reigning IPL champion Super Kings, the team’s management supports the all-rounder’s choice to forego the competition, which is anticipated to take place in March and May of next year.
According to a release from Chennai Super Kings, “England Test captain and all-rounder Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 to manage his workload and fitness.”
“Stokes, 32, became a part of the Super Kings ahead of the successful IPL 2023.
“He recently participated in the ODI World Cup 2023, which he came out of retirement for.
“The Chennai Super Kings management is supportive of Ben in his decision to manage his workload with England playing a five-Test series in India before the IPL and then the T20 World Cup in June 2024.”
